Once regarded as one of the largest Mental Asylums in Europe, Whittingham was home for around 3500 patients. During the 1970’s, improvements in mental health research combined with allegations of cruelty to patients eventually lead to the demise of the Asylum. Whittingham closed its doors for good in 1995. The buildings fell into disrepair, vandalism and theft, before being demolished for good in 2016 to make way for new housing and by-passes. Hopefully this will give some record of how the buildings looked in their final days.
